Entrepreneurialism – starting a consulting business

Tim writes in… Topic: Entrepreneurialism

Most recently [my experience] a senior program manager for a small computer and electronic manufacturing company.  It was a combination project and account management spot where I handled the end customer and all the fun and excitement that comes with it.  It was one of the best jobs I’ve had which tied together my customer service and IT experiences.  I can handle the challenging customers.

I worked in the IT department for both the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and Ohio Auditor’s Office for about 6 years.  At the AG’s office I configured and deployed the desktop and laptops throughout the office utilizing Novell ZENworks to deploy applications and group policy.  At the Auditor ’s office I was a network administrator and Groupwise email administrator.

Prior to that I worked at 2 software companies where I provided customer service and pre-sales support and training for international distributors and domestic customers.

For several years I have been asked and considered consulting.  So this is the best time now to see what it is all about, what it would take do start my own business or join up with someone else perhaps. I have never been an entrepreneur before.

The natural choice based on my experience would be to provide some kind of IT related consulting services.  When looking at industries that have a strong future, the medical arena comes to mind.  I need to learn more about electronic medical records…

Tim’s questions:
1. What companies are out there, what products are in use or coming along soon,
2. Can I become an expert on any of them and provide training, consulting, implementation for them?
3. How can I help small businesses in a consulting role?  Point of sale systems have always interested me (the touch screen/scanners used in stores and restaurants).
4. How can I get in the loop to install/support them for the small business owner?
5. Are certain types of people entrepreneurs more than others?  Do you have to have your own unique idea to be an entrepreneur or is it about the execution and follow-through?

Thank you and I look forward to the call on Thursday.

Tim
